MIDI - How much do you know about it?

    It nearly didn't happen.

And yet, your DAW, whichever one you use, relies on it.

But how well do you understand MIDI?

    I don't know. I don't really know why I raised the topic.

It just occurred to me that.... I grew up in a time before MIDI... In my day, if you wanted two synthesizers to play the same tune you had to convince two blokes in flared trousers to stand next to them whilst being sober enough to be able to play them together. Before active sensing was invented one of the blokes had to be sufficiently not 'off his head on LSD' to notice that the other chap had nodded off.

These days there's MIDI in your phone, your door bell, your DAW and probably even the diggly-dongly tune played by some peoples' toasters to let them know that the slices of bread have been turned into 'the food of the gods'.

I was just wondering how much you young people knew, or indeed needed to know, about the fragile 5 pin din.

You mean to tell me that you could make sounds like that in 1992 using nothing more than a SC55, pro24 and some scotch tape?

I am not going to talk to you any more shadow :evil grin: How? How the hell did you get those sounds?

I enjoyed reading your post about the 'early years' of shadowwarrior music production. In those days tB was using a Roland D-10, and S-330 sampler, a couple of Junos all linked up to BBC Micro Computer via a custom made MIDI interface based on a 'project' in a magazine. I couldn't make sounds like that.

So there it is. I don't know why I asked the question about MIDI but it prompted ShadowWarrior to post a link to an inspiring album he made over 20 years ago. Result!

Now go and listen to InnerSpaceTrip people. It's really rather good.

I don't know enough about MIDI imo. That said, it's ok because when I need to know something it will be on the internet. There is a master MIDI man here - r00n.

InnerSpace Trip is cool; amazing it was made so long ago. I think it should be released today as modern techno.

    hi

if you got an older pc then this might help you out

adfread 1.1 - Amiga Disk Reader
    -------------------------------

This utility will allow you to create ADF floppy disk images from regular
Amiga disks using standard PC hardware. It uses same method as Disk2FDI
but is compatible with Windows 2000 and newer.

    Requirements
    ------------

    - Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista
    - PC mainboard must have hardware support for 2 floppy drives
Unfortunately most modern PC mainboards don't have B: drive motor
and select signals connected. MB is compatible if you can configure
both A: and B: drives in BIOS. (usually..)
    - 2 non-USB floppy drives installed on the same cable
    - Regular format Amiga disks without any copy-protection
    - A normal PC-formatted 1.44M floppy

    Instructions
    ------------

    - Install fdrawcmd.sys from http://simonowen.com/fdrawcmd/
    - Insert your Amiga disk in A:
    - Insert the PC-formatted disk in B:
    - From a command prompt, run: adfread.exe newimage.adf

The read process will take 2-3 minutes, during which the reading process will
be reported. Retries are a normal part of the read process, but failure to
read after 9 attempts will cause the utility to move on anyway. You can retry
the operation as many times as you want, only failed sectors will be retried
    .

The resulting newimage.adf file is ready for use WinUAE!

driver fdrawcmd - link working i grabbed it http://simonowen.com/fdrawcmd/

    adfread 1.1 - working link http://www.winuae.net/frames/download.html

there are other options if you have a working amiga

MIDI _ the funny bone of life.

what it actually means i have no idea, i must have been really wasted.
