Here's a quick tip for sounds that are not bass sounds and are not going to be used on their own.
Roll off the bottom end. A lot.
It'll save time at mixdown.
Remember; it doesn't have to sound nice. It has to sound nice in context.
Think of the low end of your mix as really precious real estate.
You don't want anything in there that shouldn't be there.

Some sounds shouldn't be anywhere near the low end. For example, as a keyboard player I sometimes let my left hand stray into this precious zone. Unless I was deliberately playing keyboard bass I would expect you to high pass filter my arse the hell out of there.
Whether you are mixing live or in the studio... Grab that high pass filter and clean up that bottom end!
